Painting Outdoors Workshop with Plein Air Artist Iona Molleson
Sat 23rd May 2026 2pm to 6pm based in Studio 3 at Poldrate
This workshop will take place along the River Tyne, within 10 minute walking distance of Poldrate Arts and Crafts Centre but will begin in Studio 3 of PACC. A Painting Demonstration will be provided at the start and tuition throughout the workshop as your own plein air painting develops.

List of Materials and Equipment to bring on the day:
Small sketchbook and sketching material such as a pencil or charcoal.
Field Easel or Box Easel-otherwise you can sit and hold your canvas.
Folding stool
Primed Canvas, Gessoed Primed Board or Canvas Board-ideally a few sizes to choose from
Set of either acrylic or oil paint tubes- at a minimum- titanium white and the primary colours of cadmium yellow, cadmium red, cobalt blue as well as burnt sienna or transparent red oxide (if using oil) for ground colours will do. Below is a list of colours I use outdoors.
Titanium White
Cadmium Yellow
Cadmium Lemon Yellow
Naples Yellow-very handy
Yellow Ochre-very useful
Cadmium Blue
Cerulean Blue-very useful
Prussian Blue
King’s Blue
Ultramarine
Raw Umber-very good for making darks
Burnt Umber

Alizarin Crimson-very useful

Burnt Sienna-good for ground colour and under-painting

NB this is really a wishlist as you can make most colours with the primaries but it can be fun to buy just a couple more colours you like the look of from the list above.
Range of synthetic Acrylic or Oil Brushes.
(You could treat yourself to two Rosemary Brushes Long Ivory Synthetic Flats in size 4, 6, 8 or 10 which are very useful to the plein air painter.)
Bottle of Zest-it which is solvent free (or paint thinner for oils only)
Liquin (aids flow and quicker drying plus adds gloss to oil paints only)
Cotton Rag or two. (Old T-Shirt or Pillow Slip cut up. )
Palette or tear off pallete pad
Jar with lid
Single artist’s dipper (or double to clip onto palette for thinner and liquin)
Apron/overall
Water to drink & snack
Sun Cream and Sun Hat!
