This welcoming, inclusive course is aimed at those with little or no pottery experience and will not be suitable for those with previous pottery experience. Learners will be encouraged to follow their own creative instincts and can choose whether to hand-build or throw on the wheel, or do a combination of both.

Each week, the tutor will demonstrate the creation of forms covering a range wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques across the 6-week block, as well as refining forms and various decorating methods. Learners will be free to choose whether to practise the demonstrated technique, or follow their own creative ideas or projects.

All learners will receive support and guidance throughout the classes, understanding that all learners have individual needs and learning styles.

Skills covered across the 6-week course:

Wheel throwing including: centering the clay, opening the form, creating and consolidating the base, pulling up the walls, refining your shape

Trimming and turning leather-hard forms and creating foot rings

Creating and attaching handles

Pinching and coiling forms by hand

Slab-building

Decorating including: slip, underglazes, wax resist techniques, carving leather-hard clay

Glazing bisqueware with dipping glazes

Learners will be encouraged to work at their own pace with support and guidance. Creativity and imagination are encouraged! Ideas for projects will be provided but learners are also free to follow their own creative interests.

“You can’t buy happiness but you can buy clay and that’s pretty much the same thing!”

Materials will be provided and are included in the cost of the course. Pottery is messy! Please wear old clothes, tie up long hair and ensure nails are cut short.

Please note, learners are expected to help clean up the tools and equipment during the final 15 minutes of each class.
